To safeguard aviation safety at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (API), the state-owned company that manages Bali’s only air gateway, is undertaking a 1010-month-long upgrading and hardening of the Airport’s sole 3,000-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway to permit wide-body and super-jumbo aircraft to land and take off in Bali.
The resurfacing of the runway during nighttime hours from 2:00 am until 7:00 am – a period during which Bali Airport is usually closed to aviation.
The General Manager of Ngurah Rai International Airport, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, has revealed that in the past two years, the Airport’s management has focused on the revitalization and optimization of the runway, apron, terminal, access roads, and air bridges.
Syaugi Shahab told Tribun-Bali.com that it was the responsibility of API to consistently ensure that the Airport’s infrastructure is always in top condition.
Shahab said the nighttime overlay repairs on the runway will take 10 months to complete.
The runway at Bali’s Airport is very busy, recording 142,000 aircraft movements in 2024, or approximately 388 movements per day on average.
Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport currently serves the world’s largest aircraft, including the Boeing 777-300 ET and the Airbus A380-800.
“With flight traffic continuing to increase every year and airlines increasingly choosing wide-body aircraft, especially for long-haul flights, we’ve designed the runway pavement to be resistant to high temperatures and heavy runway loads,” said Syaugi.
“Bali’s Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport is currently the only airport in Indonesia that regularly serves the world’s largest aircraft, the A380-800,” he explained.
To ensure safe and smooth flight operations during the runway resurfacing, Ngurah Rai Airport Management has coordinated with Airnav Indonesia’s Denpasar Branch and airline operators.
“We have also issued a ‘Notice to Airmen (NOTAM)’ stating that our runway will be temporarily closed during the overlay work, from 2:00 am to 7:00 am,” he explained.
With this notification, airline operators have been instructed to adjust their flight schedules to and from Ngurah Rai International Airport.
