Indonesian Immigration Uses Face Recognition Technology in the Arrest of an American Suspected of Creating Pornography in Bali
Kompas.com reports that the Director General of Immigration, working in cooperation with the Indonesian Bureau of Prisons, has taken into custody an American tourist, Taylor Kirby Whitemore, for violating pornography regulations.
The American was arrested as he was in the process of leaving Indonesia, boarding a flight to Malaysia on 25 March 2025. An immigration official, Yuldi Yusman, on Wednesday, 21 May 2025, said that Whitemore was apprehended by a team of Intelligence and Enforcement Officials (Inteldakim) officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport while the American was preparing to leave for Kuala Lumpur on Malindo Air OD712. Yuldi revealed that the American was arrested based on evidence secured by the Digital Forensic Cyber Crime Division of the Directorate General of Immigration in an investigation commenced on 17 February 2025.
Investigators claim that Whitemore, using the online identity of @oliver_woodx promoted pay-to-view pornographic content uploaded to a Telegram account. Initially, immigration officials strongly suspected that the pornographic video being promoted by Whitemore had been filmed in Indonesia.
Using face recognition technology, Cybercrime investigators identified Taylor Whitemore, who has been living in Bali using a visitor’s visa. Based on the evidence gathered by officials, Whitemore was placed on a “no-fly” list preventing him from leaving Indonesia.
Yuldi stated that on April 9, 2025, Whitemore was questioned by officers. As a result, evidence was discovered that an X Account and a Telegram Account owned by the American were being used to promote pornographic videos produced in Indonesia. Based on the evidence in hand,

He has been charged with violating Article 122 of Law Number 6 of 2011 for violating the terms of his visitor visa with a maximum prison sentence of 5 years and a maximum fine of Rp. 500 million.
