KMP Gerbang Samudra 2 – an inter-island ferry sailing on the Bali Straits from Ketapang, East Java to Gilimanuk, West Bali, ran aground in bad weather on a coral reef 100 meters from the landing pier at the Gilimanuk Ferry Terminal at around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, 22 June 2025.
The ship departed the Port of Ketapan at 4:20 a.m..
Preliminary reports suggest that the ferry, captained by M. Reza Pratama, lost its bearing in bad weather and strong currents.
As reported by Beritabali.com, Denpost.id, and BaliPost.com, initial attempts by a sister vessel (KMP Gerbang Samudra 5) to tow the ferry off the reef were unsuccessful.

The grounding was reported to the Navy and the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office at 8:40 am, some three hours after the incident. 8 personnel from the Jembran Search and Rescue Post were quickly dispatched to the location of the grounding under the coordination of the Indonesian Navy and the Gilimanuk Port Master.
The Search and Rescue team deployed a rigid inflatable boat (RIB 01 SAR Jembrana ) and a Patrol Boat from the Water Police (KP Tanjung Rening XI-2006) to assist in evacuating passengers from the ship. At 11:35 am, some 6.5 hours after the stranded ship’s scheduled arrival, all 76 passengers had been safely transferred to the landing pier in Gilimanuk and the Gilimanuk Ferry Terminal.
Meanwhile, 24 crewmembers of the KMP Gerbang Samudra 2 remained on board the grounded ship to assist in freeing the vessel from the reef.
Dewa Hendri G, the Coordinator for the Jembrana Search and Rescue Post (SAR Jembrana) commented on Sunday: “The evacuation ran smoothly. All passengers are safe.”
The rescue operation involved members of SAR Jembrana, the Indonesian Navy, the Water Police (Polair), the Gimilanuk Port Master’s office, the ferry operator (ASDP), the Department of Transportation (BPTD), Mobile Police (Brimob), and the State Insurance Provider (Jasa Raharja).
