So African Sentenced in Bali for Hiding a Kg of Meth in her Underpants

As reported by Kompas.com, the Denpasar Court handed down a prison sentence on Tuesday, 25 November 2025,  of 8.5 years to a South African tourist, Lungile Ntombenhile Mzimela, found guilty of smuggling one kilogram of methamphetamines (sabu) via Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Prosecutors proved that Mzimela attempted to smuggle methamphetamines concealed in her underwear.

The three-member panel of judges handed the South African a sentence of eight years and six months, in combination with a fine of Rp. 1 billion, which, if left unpaid, will add three months to the prison sentence. The judges said that the defendant had put the people of Bali at genuine risk. In partial mitigation, the judge viewed the woman as a narcotics courier working for high pay from a drug lord.

In further mitigation, the judges noted that the defendant is a pregnant mother who is the breadwinner for her family.

The sentence of 8.5 years was less than the 11 years sought by State Prosecutors. The final sentence now has the force of law, as the defendant has decided not to appeal the Court’s punishment.

Lungile Ntombenhile Mzimela was arrested on Sunday, 07 May 2025, at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, where officials found one kilogram of methamphetamines concealed in her underwear. Officials report that the drugs she carried while flying from Johannesburg, South Africa, in return for a courier payment of Rp. 25 million.

“Lungile N admitted to bringing methamphetamine from Johannesburg to Bali on Sindi’s orders, to be handed over to someone in Bali,” police revealed during a July press conference in Bali.
