Plans Revoked for New Trash Dump in Landih, Bangli, Bali

Balipost.com reports that the Bali Provincial Administration has cancelled plans to operate a large rubbish dump (TPA) in the Village of Landih, Bangli Regency, to replace the Suwung TPA in South Denpasar, which has been ordered closed by the Central Government in Jakarta. The dramatic change of plans is detailed in a formal letter from the Forestry and Environmental Service in Bali (Number B.24.000/250/PSLB3-PPKLHSEKRET/DLH), which was addressed to the Chairman of Bali’s Communication Forum for the Self-management of Trash.

In the subject letter, dated 14 January 2026, it was explained that the cancellation of plans to establish the Bangli TPA was based on several reconsiderations, primarily regarding technical aspects, travel distance, and the anticipated high cost of moving trash over the 59 kilometers separating TPA Suwung from TPA Landih in Bangli.

Despite the earlier announcement to close TPA Suwung, taken on the orders of the National Government in Jakarta, the Bali Provincial administration and the Denpasar Municipal authorities are said to be busily undertaking a comprehensive review of ways to increase TPA Suwung’s carrying capacity. The review is expected to result in a concrete plan that will enable TPA Suwung to remain open and operate at optimal capacity.

The final review will then be submitted to the Indonesian Ministry of the Environment to request formal permission for the continued operation of TPA Suwung. The extraordinary extension is necessary to permit the continued operations of TPA Suwung and to allow the Province of Bali to create a central rubbish disposal facility capable of processing the trash now being sent to TPA Suwung.

Cooperative steps are also being taken to enhance the carrying capacity of TPA Suwung during the transition period, pending the opening of a more suitable Central Provincial TPA.

The letter from the Forestry and Environmental Service in Bali was signed electronically by Bali’s Provincial Secretary, Dewa Made Indra, on behalf of Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster. Copies of the letter were also channeled to the Governor of Bali, the Mayor of Denpasar, and the Regent of Badung.

Provincial officials have expressed hope that processing Bali’s trash can continue to be conducted in a conducive manner, allowing the additional time needed to prepare a modern, coordinated, and sustainable trash-handling facility capable of serving the entire Island.
