Why Visitor Numbers to Tanah Lot Temple are Down 10%

Radar Bali reports that the number of visitors to the Tanah Lot Temple in Tabanan, West Bali, declined 10%  in the first half of 2025 when compared to the same period in 2024.

The manager of the Tanah Lot Tourism Complex (DTW Tanah Lot), I Wayan Sudiana, cites several factors as causing the decline in visitors, primarily connected to the global political situation and Indonesia’s domestic economy.

Sudiana confirmed that tourism arrivals for the period January through July 2025 declined 10% when compared to 2024. “At most, it’s stuck at 5,000 people per day; it could even be below that,” he said.

Global Politics and RI Domestic Economy to Blame

Sudiana says the visitor downturn at Tanah Lot is the result of armed conflicts taking place in various parts of the world, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Israel’s attack on Iran, and even the border conflict underway between Cambodia and Thailand. These global conflicts, he says, are causing people to cancel their holiday plans to Bali.

Additionally, he says the Indonesian government’s efficiency measures to shrink budget expenditures have reduced the purchasing power of many Indonesians. Moreover, domestic financial policy has slowed economic growth, causing many companies and schools to postpone or cancel study tours and holiday trips. Sudiana also said the eruption of the Lewotobi Volcano in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, has disrupted some flight schedules. Meanwhile, Australia has issued a formal travel warning against travel to Bali.

Still Optimistic About Tanah Lot Music Festival

Despite current difficulties, the management of the Tanah Lot Complex remains optimistic that visitor numbers will soon rebound. Among the recovery efforts underway is the 6th Tanah Lot Festival scheduled for 22 – 24 August 2025. “Hopefully, the festival will boost tourism visits to Tanah Lot,” said Sudiana.
