The entire Island of Bali experienced an electrical blackout on Friday, 02 May 2025. Everyone living in Bali without access to emergency power generation had their power interrupted starting at 16:00. In most instances, the power failure affecting the entire Island also shut down internet and communication services.
The power outage was blamed on a failure of a high-voltage submarine power cable connecting Bali to Java, affecting an estimated 940,000 consumers, lasting until around 19:30 hours.
Speaking on behalf of the State Power Board (PLN), Gregorius Adi Trianto explained that PLN workers could respond quickly to the power failure, the cause of which officials is still under investigation; he went on to say that early indications are the blackout was caused by the failure of a main interconnecting cable between Java and Bali. Adding: “The actual and definitive cause of the power outage remains under investigation.
PLN officials said that in any power outage, priority is given to restoring essential public services such as hospitals, airports, seaports, and popular public venues.
