CNBC Indonesia reports that the government, recognizing the potential economic boost, has reaffirmed its commitment to continue the construction of the Gilimanuk—Mengwi Toll Road in Bali in 2024. Once completed, this crucial infrastructure project will significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time, thereby stimulating economic growth in the region.
Construction was halted after The National Toll Road Agency (BUJT) via PT Jagat Kerti Bali was forced to withdraw due to failure to meet various financial obligations with suppliers. Before withdrawing, PT Jagat Kerti Bali secured 44.64 hectares of land for Rp. 112.37 billion.
Data from the management team assigned with constructing the Gilimanuk – Mengwi, the project has been divided into three sections :
- Section One: Gilimanuk – Pekutatan ( 53,6 km)
- Section Two: Pekutatan – Soka (24,3 km)
- Section Three: Soka – Mengwi (18,9 km)
The road project was targeted for completion in 2028.
The 96.84-kilometer segment of toll road in Bali requires a total investment of Rp. 24.98 trillion to eliminate traffic jams and gridlock between Bali’s western port of Gilimanuk and the provincial capital of Denpasar. Once the segment is completed, current travel time is expected to be reduced from 5-7 hours to only 1.5-2 hours.
Officials are also hopeful that, once completed, the north-south toll road will help create a more equitable distribution of economic development across all areas of the Island. Currently, economic development in Bali is focused on a narrow area of South Bali, representing only 9% of the Island’s coastal land mass.
Unique to the planning of the 96,54-kilometer toll road is that it includes a separate lane with a special two-wheeled lane for bicycles and motorbikes.
