As reported by Beritabali.com and CNN Indonesia, a 24-year-old Dutch woman, Fleur Biegstraaten, has died after falling during a mountain- trek on Bali’s sacred Mount Agung on Thursday, 13 May 2024. Climbing with a friend, Biergstraaten was not accompanied by a local mountain guide.
A spokesman for the Karangasem Police Precinct, Iptu I Gede Sukadana, said the woman fell on the mountain slope at 3:00 a.m. on Thursday. On Saturday, 25 May, Police Inspector Sukadana said: “The victim fell because she was not cautious in how she climbed and failed to use an experienced guide.”
Biegstraaten was climbing Mount Agung with a Danish companion, Patrick Savskov Andersen, age 33. The two had commenced their climb from the parking area at Pura Pasar Agung, arriving by motorbike. As the couple climbed the 3,031-meter volcano, Fleur Biegstraaten reportedly fell into a 15-meter ravine.
Biegstraaten’s boyfriend Andersen traveled back to Pura Pasar Agung to seek help, after which 20 volunteer rescue team members rushed to the accident scene. The group used a stretcher to carry the still-conscious woman down the mountain slope. Arriving at Pura Pasar Agung, the woman was brought to the local health center, where she was declared dead on arrival.
The Police Inspector said the woman suffered several serious injuries that included multiple bone fractures and open wounds to her head.
The police told CNN that there were no signs of violence committed against the Dutch woman, and indications were that her death was due to misadventure.
Biegstraaten is at least the fifth fatality among people climbing Mount Agung since 2008. The list of the dead now includes:
